New garage door installation means taking out the old door and its hardware and fitting a new door with its own springs, tracks, rollers and seals, sized to your opening. You need it when the door is rusted through, badly damaged, or costing more in repairs each year than it is worth.
New garage door installation makes sense when repairs keep adding up, several panels are damaged or the door has rusted badly. Bristlecone measures the opening, the headroom and the side room, then helps you choose a door that fits. The install includes new springs sized to the new door, new tracks and rollers, and fresh weather seals.
Signs Your Old Door Is Done
- Rust has eaten through the bottom section or along the seams, not just the paint.
- More than one section is cracked, dented or bowed.
- Repairs keep coming back: a spring one year, cables and rollers the next.
- The door is very heavy, such as an old solid wood door, and wears out springs and openers.
- Parts or matching sections for your model are no longer made.
- The garage is cold, hot or noisy because the door has no insulation or the seals are gone.
- You want a new look, windows, or a quieter and better-sealed door.
How We Install a New Garage Door
- Measure. We measure the opening width and height, the headroom above it and the side room on each side.
- Choose. You pick the style, material, insulation and windows, and we confirm the springs and track the door needs.
- Remove. We release the spring tension, then take down the old door and hardware safely.
- Hang. The new sections, tracks, rollers and springs go up, with fresh weather seals.
- Balance and connect. We set the springs so the door holds its place by hand, then connect and set the opener.
- Test. We check the auto-reverse and the seals at the floor and sides, and run the door through several cycles.
Door Materials and Options
- Steel: strong and low in upkeep, plain or with a wood-grain finish. Near the coast, keep the finish intact, since a deep scratch can start rust.
- Wood: warm and handsome, heavier than steel, and it needs sealing or paint on a schedule to keep moisture out.
- Composite: a molded skin over a frame that gives a wood look with less upkeep and good resistance to damp.
- Insulation: single-layer doors have none. Insulated doors add a foam core, which makes the door quieter, stiffer and better at holding the temperature.
- Windows: a row of glass lets daylight in, and frosted glass keeps your privacy.
- Track and springs: standard-lift track fits most garages, while high-lift track uses a tall ceiling for storage. Springs are matched to the weight of the new door.
Choosing a Door Near the Coast
Salt air is hard on bare steel. Ask about finishes and hardware that resist rust, and keep the bottom seal in good shape. If your opener is old, we can quote a new opener with the door. If only one section is damaged, panel replacement may be enough.
Safety During and After the Install
The dangerous moment in a door swap is the old spring. A loaded torsion spring can spin a winding bar hard enough to break a wrist, and an extension spring can whip loose if its cable fails. That is why we release the tension before anything else. Once the new door is up, we test the auto-reverse and show you the manual release. Keep fingers clear of the joints between sections while the door moves.
Repair or Replace?
A door with one dented section, a broken spring or worn rollers can usually be repaired for far less than a new door, so see garage door repair first if the door is sound overall. Replacement makes sense when the rust is structural, when several sections are damaged, or when the repair bill keeps growing. When it is close, we price both so you can compare.
New Garage Door Installation Across Our Service Area
We install new doors in all four towns we cover. In Newport Beach and on Balboa Island, where the air carries salt off the water, we steer you toward finishes and hardware made to resist rust. On Newport Coast, wide double doors are worth measuring twice, and if your street has a community association, check its rules on style and color before you order. In Costa Mesa, the measure, the options and the way we quote are the same. For repairs on your current door, see garage door repair. Book a measure on the contact page.

New doors are quoted after we measure, because size, style and insulation change the price. Full price list
What moves the price of a new door: the size of the opening, single or double, the material and finish, insulation, windows, standard or high-lift track, and whether a new opener goes in at the same time. Taking down the old door is part of the job. You get the full figure after the measure, and you approve it before anything is ordered.
New Door Questions
Do you remove the old door?
Yes. Taking down the old door, its springs and its tracks is part of the install. The spring tension is released first, which is the risky part and the reason not to try it yourself. The old sections come out one at a time before the new door goes up. Spring work on its own is covered on our garage door spring repair page.
Will my old opener work with a new door?
Sometimes. If the opener is in good shape and strong enough for the new door's weight, it can stay and be reset to the new travel. If it is old, loud or has no safety eyes, it is usually smarter to replace it at the same time. See garage door opener installation for how we size a new unit to the door.
How do I choose a door style?
Start with the house. Flush panels suit modern homes, raised panels suit traditional ones, and carriage-house designs add a wood-look front. Then pick the material and insulation, and decide on windows. If your street has an HOA, check its rules on style and color before you order. If only one section is damaged, panel replacement may be enough.
Is steel or wood better near the ocean?
Steel with a good factory finish and composite doors handle salt air well when they are rinsed and the finish is kept intact. Wood looks warm but needs regular sealing or paint, or moisture gets in. Whatever the material, rust-resistant hardware helps. Our garage door repair page covers the hardware we check on every visit.
How is the price for a new door set?
After we measure. The width and height of the opening, the material, the insulation, any windows and the track type all change the figure, and so does adding a new opener. We quote it on site, with removal of the old door included, and you approve it before anything is ordered. The pricing page lists the from-prices for spring, cable, roller and track work.
