Garage Door Repair Questions About Springs and Cables

What should I do if my spring breaks?

Leave the door closed and keep people away from it. Do not use the opener, because it can strip its gear or pull the door crooked trying to lift the dead weight. Park outside if you can, then call us for spring repair. We measure the old spring and replace it, or both on a two-spring door.

Why is one side of my door lower?

That usually points to a cable or drum problem. A frayed or loose cable lets one corner drop, and the door can bind in the track if it keeps running. Stop using the door and see cable repair. We replace both cables together so the door lifts level.

Does salt air hurt garage doors?

Yes, over time. Salt and damp air can rust springs, cables and rollers. Regular checks help catch wear early. Rinse the door now and then, keep the bottom seal clean, and oil the hinges and springs a few times a year. A yearly garage door repair check finds rust before a part fails.

Openers and Safety Sensors

My door reverses before closing. Why?

The safety eyes may be dirty or out of line. Wipe them, and check that the small lights on both sensors glow steady with nothing in the beam. Damp air can corrode the sensor wires, and a close-force setting that is too low can also turn the door back. If it continues, read about opener repair.

Is my old opener worth fixing?

Repair makes sense when the motor runs and a single part has failed, such as a gear, a sensor or a logic board. A new unit is worth a look when the opener is loud, has no safety eyes, or keeps failing. See opener installation for belt, chain and wall-mount options.

Prices and the Diagnostic Visit

How much does a new spring cost?

Spring replacement starts from $150 per spring on our owner price list. The final price is agreed before work. A door with two springs needs both, so the quote covers each one. Cables start from $150 per cable and rollers from $120 per set if they need work too. Details are on the spring repair page.

Is there a charge for the diagnostic visit?

The diagnostic is $0 with a completed repair. The technician finds the cause, tells you the price from the owner list, and starts only after you agree. The full list is on our pricing page, and the garage door repair page explains the visit.

Why are opener repairs and panels quoted on site?

Because the price depends on what we find. An opener fix depends on the brand, the model and the part that failed. A panel depends on the maker, size, material and color of your door. We look first and give one price before any work. See panel replacement for how matching works.

Emergencies and After-Hours Calls

Are you open at night?

Yes. We answer 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Tell us what the door is doing and whether it is open or closed, and we will talk you through keeping the garage safe. See emergency repair for what to do while you wait.

My door is stuck open. What can I do right now?

Do not force it down with the opener. If the door sits crooked or a roller has left the track, keep clear of it, since it can fall. Move valuables inside the house and call us. A door off its rails needs track repair, and a broken spring needs new springs before the door can close.

New Doors and Panels

Do you replace single panels?

Often, if the maker still offers your design. We read the label inside the door, measure the section and check the color before we quote. A sun-faded door may show a slight color difference next to the new section. The panel replacement page explains the rest.

How do I know it is time for a whole new door?

Think about a new door when several sections are rusted through or bent, when the frame has warped, or when your old model's parts are gone from the market. Insulation, a quieter ride or a new style are good reasons too. Read new garage door installation to see how we plan the swap.
